We got a campsite (G9) for 4 nights. We could not get Saturday and Sunday as they were not “free” yet. It was Labor Day weekend and it would be packed. We did get them the next morning. We headed up the following morning to catch the Trolly around the lake. It was a guided tour that stopped at several spots and you got a good history of the lake and the park.
Charlie was a good and funny guide. I did not even look over the edge before getting on the trolley. It was a hazy day. The smoke had come this far north. I was hoping to avoid that. I was beautiful none the less. Day two we hit a few sights in the east side, but day three was the best.
It rained overnight and the smoke was gone and the lake was AMAZING. There was great reflections of the clouds, it was clear and truly a beautiful view from all sides of the lake which we drove around. It was cold at night this “late” in their season and Wizard Island was closed to hiking on August 15th. I will come back for that. I did not get a view from inside the caldera so I will return here for a couple reasons beyond seeing this amazing place again.
We headed over to Painted Desert and spent one night in Mitchell at the Oregon Hotel. We left on the second day to head back to Portland for baby help.
