Kos and Rhodes 2012
I had read about Kos and Rhodes before we left for Turkey. Since we were already going to be in Bodrum Turkey, why not go see Rhodes. I had never been in a walled city before. It was a ferry ride away. We went to Kos first. I had heard it was touristy and busy. I had heard Rhodes was a quaint little town. I found the opposite true in each location. Kos was a laid back, quiet town. We walked along the beach roads and around the ruins that dotted the town. We found nice restaurants and enjoyed the castle. It was nothing like I expected. It was May before the tourist hordes arrive, but it not what I expected. I was pleasantly surprised. We spent a day there on the way to Rhodes and a half a day on the way back to Bodrum.
Rhodes was nice too, but it is not a quiet and quaint town. It was bustling and there were shops throughout the city. The main though fare was packed with restaurants and gift shops end to end It was nothing like I expected. We started walking off the ferry and Sally noticed we were heading the wrong way along the waterfront. She was right. So we took the first road into the city… the walled city. The walls were very high. They were 40 feet high if I had to guess, and once you are inside there was a lot to see. We just got off the Ferry. We wanted to get to our hotel and drop our stuff. We walk up the main drag looking for a way out to the main street. Did I mention this is a walled city? Walking and walking and looking at the maps and walking and walking more. HOW DO WE GET OUT OF HERE? We hit the end? Are you kidding me? The street was closed for construction. But the exit we want is just right there. We were staring at a new wall. UG! So we walked back to the last road and I started walking down it. This is the funny part (in hindsight).  Now there are many cobblestone and just plain stone roads and pathways here. When you are pulling your roller bag behind you it is like pulling a huge vibrator. DDDDDDDDDDDD! I started down this road for 40 yards and then Sally said “I’m not going down there”. Now I thought she meant she did not want to walk on this very rough road dragging her roller bag. So I walked back and grabbed her suitcase and picked it up and started down the road again. This did not please her as I came to find out later. After another 100 yards FINALLY we saw a street. We were FREE. We made it out of the walled city. Now I could get my bearings and get us to our hotel. Whew!
What Sally actually meant was I have no idea what the plan is and you need to talk to me and let me know what you are thinking. This is the difference between Men and Women (okay, one of the many differences that make it so exiting). Rule # 6 – Talk to your partner – Talk to her/him a lot. PEOPLE CANNOT READ MINDS, Well okay; you know what’s on his mind most of the time, but occasionally you will need to talk.
All’s well that ends well. We got to our hotel and we found a nice restaurant across the street. This was a travel day so we were successful. It was a bit stressful, but we had no other plans. The next day we walked and few blocks back into the city early in the morning. Everything was closed and we got a fantastic view of alleys and doorways and people free streets. We say things that many people never get to see. People live in Rhodes. I am going to call it Rodos now. That is the local incarnation. We saw where people lived, B&B’s and cars trying to navigate those tiny streets. We walked for a couple hours and only see a few people. It was fantastic. Go up in the tower. See everything you can. The views were great. You really saw the walls around the city. I enjoyed that view. And I enjoyed the view in the marina with the cruise ship coming in! Woah! Slow down there…. Turn…. The harbor is that way (pointing right). This cruise ship looked like it was coming right through that wall.
The shops, the restaurants, the bird show, the playing children were all part of the ambiance. It made the time in Rodos enjoyable. The sunrise was really cool with the empty beach and the beach umbrellas. The food was good and the new dog friend to show us the way back to the Marina was awesome. He walked the entire way with us. He stopped for breakfast with us and then only left when he had an offer for food right at the Marina. Sally even wrote a story about him.
Once we got back to Kos we rented a scooter and drove to the far side of the island.  You always hear of the scooter trips. This was fun. We had 5 hours before the ferry to Bodrum and we used it wisely. It was a lunch out of the tourist area and a fun ride together. And figuring out how to fill the gas tank was fun. That should be Rule #7 – check the gas gauge. We almost ran out of gas. That would have sucked. But I will save that rule for something better.
In 2016 will are spending a month in Greece. That will be the mainland and then island hop down to Santorini and Crete. I hope the fun will continue there.
