I have not posted anything since Budapest. How am I going to sum up 12 days in Croatia?
I am first going to speak about cynicism. I am seeing some of the most amazing things that are available on this planet.
As I see more I am harder to impress. The Roman Forum in Rome and here, in Athens, there was a similar “field”. They
are amazing ruins, but I have “seen them before”. I saw them in Turkey and I was WOWed! I saw them in Rome was it
was cool. I saw more ruins in Croatia neat. And lastly I saw a ruins in Athens. Now I am not talking about the Acropolis
or Parthenon. Those are AMAZING sites to see. I am talking about the small town of ruins on the large field that used
to be “This is so cool!”. Now it is less so. This in not Pompeii. It is a bit sad, but not unexpected. I am becoming cynical.
I know this is little surprise to most of you.
I will finish seeing 8 of my top 10 places I have dreamed of seeing during my trip this year.
In the past 4 years I have been to Machu Picchu Peru, Chichen Itza Mexico, and Siem Reap Cambodia (Angkor Wat).
Not on the list but should have been - Bagan Myanmar, Ephesus Turkey, Istanbul Turkey,
What I have seen this year so far are the Coliseum in Rome, and the Parthenon in Athens. I will be seeing Santorini
Greece, Petra Jordan, and the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador this year.
Last 2 sites on my top 10 are the Great Barrier Reef Australia and Egyptian Pyramids of Giza.
Matera Italy, Pompeii Italy, Venice Italy, Prague Czech Republic and Budapest Hungry were all great places to
see - Amazing places to see and they were not on my top 10. After all, you can only have 10 places on your top 10.
Since I lived in California most of my life access to Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Lassen Volcanic National Park, Lake Tahoe,
and this is just the mountains, is easy. I can drive for four hours and I am in Yosemite Valley and Kings canyon or
almost anywhere in the Sierra Nevada mountains. I have not even mentions the beached. California beaches are
the best in the world. I have seen some amazing beaches. St John USVI has trunk bay - AWESOME. California has
a 100 beaches that can match anywhere in the world... It’s the water that make the difference. Warm water and
colorful fish. We don’t have that and that’s why the Caribbean is so great. I digress.
I was worried I would be unimpressed at some point with one of my dreams. It did happen with the Roman
Coliseum. I was not WOWed. I was impressed and I am glad I saw it, but that WOW factor was missing. Rome
had lots to see beyond the Coliseum. The Vatican did WOW and there was amazing things all over.
And for my number one thing I want to see in this world - the Parthenon in Athens... It did Wow, but just. We
arrived right when it opened, bought our tickets and walked up. The sun was low in the sky and it created some
great photos with the sun and shade and the columns. I really enjoyed walking around with under 30 people at
the top. That lasted an hour and was enough time to see it all. There are actually three buildings on the rocky
outcrop. The Parthenon is the most notable, but the other two have great features too.
One is the entrance, Propylaia, that also has the temple of Athena Nike on it. The other is the Erechtheion. It had
the well know pillars that are women.
I started this wanting to write about Croatia and wandered into cynicism and Athens.
I will get to Croatia on my next round. I am enjoying Athens and I want to see the rest of my list and more. I don’t
ever want to be unimpressed. This world has amazing sites to see and we should never take them for granted.
