Going to the Sun Road was the road from east to west through Glacier National Park. This was Top of the World Road out of northeast Yellowstone but better. The glaciers, waterfalls, mountains and wildlife were spectacular. We drove one end to the other. Our second stop next to St Mary Lake tada! Grizzly bear! It was 200 feet down a cliff at lake level. It was a cinnamon or blonde grizzly. Very cool. Each stop had amazing views. Jagged mountains with glaciers and waterfalls coming down. The greens, Browns and Blues were fantastic. This was a great road and I get to go back through tomorrow.
It was spectacular going back too. We were heading back to get a campsite. Everyone was looky-looing. I always call people by there state or car color. Three cars up is a white car going slow so I'll say "Move it Whitey!" Or if I can see the license plate I say "Move it Colorado". These are my things; we had places to be. We had a campsite to get. We made it to Rising Sun campground and got our spot. We headed back into the park.
We hiked to Hidden Lake, Avalanche Lake and St Mary/ Virginia Falls. All 3 were good hikes with two having fantastic lakes at the end. I was quite surprised by this Park. I planned on 2 days and spent 5. If you get a late start there are shuttles. We missed a shuttle by 2 minutes and so we hitchhiked. A Blackfoot man picked us up and we talked for the 40 minutes to the top - Logan Pass. He was visiting with his daughter and a Native from Canada. There are so many hikes that you can do here. We saw lots of animals. A black bear walked right through our campsite, a grizzly, mountain goats, a big horn sheep walked across the road 20 feet from me and of course the usual marmots, squirrels and chipmunks.
The water was a unique green. Henceforth to be known a glacier green. It is in the lakes and in the streams. Take a look at the pictures to see the color.
Travel on Going to the Sun Road end to end is 45 miles. It takes 2 hours with stops it takes three hours. We did not go to the end each time. With the change of weather and times of day I took so many pictures. This Park, well this road should be on anyones road trip list.
