Latin America for less out of their San Francisco office. She is great. She helped us set up our Peru trip and
really customized it so we saw everything we wanted and had a second day at Machu Picchu and climbed
Huayna Picchu. This was a fantastic trip. It is not a tour in the traditional sense. You let them know want star
hotel you want (2 star, 3 star or 5 star) and what you want to see. They will make recommendations and provide
transportation. They made it really easy, but without the “tour” feel. It was just Sally and myself and it was a great trip.
I will provide Rylee’s contact info (and a deal) at the bottom of this post about Peru and more specifically Machu Picchu.
I wanted to go to Machu Picchu since I was 5 years old. I cannot tell you how excited I was to finally be headed there.
TACA airlines down through South America. There were 45 minute layovers in 2 countries (scary right?). The security
lines were fast and manual all the way. The guy before me was put through the ringer, belt to laptop battery, I was
done in 15 seconds. Not that they were profiling. The airports were small enough 45 minutes was a breeze.
We got to Lima. Ten million people in Lima. It is a sprawling city. We found our driver with his sign (ILans, close
enough to Ijams, thank you Sally) and headed to a quaint enclave of the city south of the cliffs. We walked to the d
owntown part and had drink and dinner. We walked around for an hour and then headed back to get some sleep.
We headed off to Cusco the next morning. Okay, not quite the next morning. Fog closed the airport till noon.
RULE # 1 Give your self extra time. We plan a day for travel. TRAVEL. Nothing else is planned for that day. It might
take an hour and it might take 15 hours. Whatever happens this is a travel day and we did not plan on anything but
travel. This will save you countless hours of stress.
There were travelers there who expected to fly to Cusco in the morning, board the train and arrive at Machu Picchu
for their tour that day. They did not make it. DON’T DO THIS! We flew to Cusco, arrived that afternoon and had a nice
walk around the city center. We had a nice dinner and we were stress free. It was a travel day. We were able to take a
tour around Cusco and a trip up to the Sacred Valley and Ollaytabambo. I spelled that without looking.
Ollantaytambo - I was so close.
Our day tour was good, not perfect. We want to see Ruins not markets. I was able to buy Sally an awesome necklace,
but I would have rather seen the ruins above Pisac. I wanted to see enough that we hired Edgar for a private tour on
a free day we had. Did you catch that?
RULE #2 Have 1 free day every week. We had a free day scheduled. We can do anything we want on this day. Go back
and catch something that we wanted more time to see. See something that we found out about on out trip. Sleep.
Whatever we want to do, it is a free day. Don’t try to see everything every minute of the day on a trip. Pick the most
important thing to see and SEE it. I have not seen the Nazca Lines or the Amazon. I saw, really saw Machu Picchu.
I spend 2 days there. I climbed Huayna Picchu. I walked around the back of Machu Picchu and saw the bridge and
walked up the sunrise trail. I was satisfied that I saw Machu Picchu. I was satisfied.
There was a couple there that went on a 90 minute tour and left. Are you kidding me? They missed 70% of the site
of Machu Picchu. DON’T DO THIS! You might see less, but you will experience more. All they got was “I was at Machu Picchu”. I have seen Machu Picchu. I saw Machu Picchu.
All of it.
We wanted to see a few things we heard about on our free day. We wanted Eduardo. He was our driver from the
Cusco Airport to our hotel. He was not a trained tour guide. His English was meh and he was perfect. We started
out early on Thursday morning and headed to Chinchero. “We don’t want to see that” we said., “Yes you do” he
said and he was right. One of my best pictures of the trip is from Chinchero. We met a family (not quite ready for us)
early in the morning, babies and children and real people, not quite ready for the tourists. It was great. We saw things
that were not on the list of “approved” sites. We had a fantastic day and saw everything we thought we might have
missed and more. Always plan for a free day to see things again or catch up on sleep (as we did in Istanbul). I love sleep!
So Peru is amazing. There is so much to see and I can’t tell you about everything, but Rylee can. She was able to make
my trip everything I wanted.

I was blown away - It is amazing!
