Why did I pick St John? Trunk Bay - It was named #1 on the top 10 beaches in the world list and I wanted to start traveling.
St John is 80% a National Park. The cruise line crowds of St Thomas are not to be seen. The feel is laid back.
I love the water and snorkeling. St John has a cove or a bay every 3 – 4 miles. Each day we would drive to the next cove and spend a couple hours snorkeling. We would come back and get lunch, take a nap and then head to the bar for dinner and some music.
It was a perfect, relaxing vacation. Driving was easy. Top speed on the island is 35 MPH, but most roads are 25 MPH. You can drive from one side to the other in 60 minutes. STAY LEFT! They drive on the left.
I loved snorkeling around each cay. I saw every color and strip and dot of fish that exists. Beautiful and colorful were understatements. Hawksnest bay had squid. They were lined up and symmetrical. Trunk bay was famous and very cool. OMG the young lady in the bikini was…. Wow. And I could not look (much), but damn! Unfair and yet I remember it 10 years later. Men. They (we) are all pigs.
Cinnamon bay and Maho bay were good. Watermelon bay and watermelon cay were AWESOME. Every amazing fish I saw was there… in miniature. I was floating in 12 inches of water seeing these fantastic fish that were 1 inch long that were the babies of all the amazing fish I saw for the entire week. That was the most memorable snorkeling ever.
We did a boat trip to the British Virgin Islands and saw the Baths, Drank the best “painkiller”* ever at Pusser Cay and jumped into the water at the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke.
We did a trip to the far end of the island and had lunch at Miss Lucy’s and stopped at Shipwreck landing. I would skip the long trip on my next visit.
We traveled south to the lower parts of the island, past the Westin resort and I would skip too.
The highlights were:
Trunk Bay – Trunk Cay
Cinnamon Bay and Maho Bay
Watermelon Bay and Watermelon Cay
The Beach Bar (live music) and Woody’s (best food) were the best establishments on the island that I found. There were lots to choose from and we kept it simple.
The trip was great and the snorkeling was the best. I had a relaxing and fun trip and would do it again in a minute.
I took an underwater camera with us at the time. The pictures turned out very washed out and did not show the fish or squid with any color worth a picture.
On my last trip I brought a Panasonic DMC-TS5 . It was fantastic. This is the best underwater point and shoot camera out there right now. I did a lot of research and found this was the best picture quality in an underwater camera.
